About Me
My name is Deborah Globus. In addition to running this new small business, I am also a wife, the mother of two wonderful kids and a past PTO president. I have worked as a kindergarten teacher and currently express that itch to teach by facilitating workshops. Throw all that in with the occasional paid gig as a non-denominational minister specializing in baby welcomings and coming of age ceremonies, as well as continued work on a book I’m writing, and I’m a very busy lady! But the work of these Story-beads is work of the heart.
I bring to this work a diverse religious background which allows me to offer a well-rounded take on Spirit and the role of the Divine in everyday life. A Catholic upbringing, an Orthodox Jewish mother-in-law, a growing understanding of the power of circle and an in-depth knowledge of nature based religions and their symbolism all contribute to a broad knowledge base. I’m told it lends me an air of wisdom and understanding uncommon in someone of my relatively young years.
The wide variety of spiritual practices that I do, including journaling, retreating and ritual work, keep me centered and sane, and connected to That Which Is Bigger. The magic that happens when I get quiet and allow myself to access my higher knowing still amazes me after so many years. Like Richard Bach, I believe we are here for “education and entertainment” and as such I’m constantly mindful of the lessons in even the most trying situations. This approach of being a constant learner leaves me open to the wonders found all around, and makes me very approachable on a personal level.
I have an undeniable drive towards creative expression and a love of color that feeds what I do. To just sit down with a basket of beads and run the colors through my fingers is a luscious joy!
Piecing it all together is a love of story, a desire for connection, and the belief that I’m fulfilling what I’ve been called to do. Guided by a sense of Spirit, I’m uniquely qualified to bring Story-Beads out into the world. There are moments when I see the parts of my life pieced together like beads on a string, like my most recent set of beads: 12 rich, weighty ceramic beads and a wooden arrowhead – for direction – keeping me on this path that I have found myself on.
The path twists and turns but the one thing always stays the same is the fulfillment I feel from bringing practical, “do-able” spiritual practices-- those that allow a sense of connection and healing-- to people in their everyday lives. Helping to deepen everyday spirituality, whether through journaling, story or these Story-Beads seems a very necessary work in our hectic lives.
This is my offering to you...
About the Company
Story-Beads own story is one of synchronicity. One serendipitous event after another, like a trail of breadcrumbs through the trees, shows me where I’ve been.
I’m often asked how I got started on this path and the answer, as it so often is, was I read a book. A friend of mine attended a workshop and turned me on to a wonderful book by Eleanor Wiley and Maggie Oman Shannon called A String and a Prayer. I was hooked. It didn’t take too much as I realized that I’d been doing work much like it ever since I was a teenager cashing in on the whole Madonna scene (remember the bracelets halfway up the arm, and then friendship bracelets? Yeah, that was me.) I was only thirteen when my grandfather first taught me about the benefits of buying in bulk!
I made my first set of beads thanks to the generosity of my friend Max when we stumbled onto a bead store in Texas. And when my mother won me a $100 gift certificate to a local craft store the idea began to grow that this could be something much more that a hobby. The Universe was putting its two cents in and challenging me to take it to the next level.
My natural inclination to teach led me to turn Story-Beads into a workshop. Thanks to the graciousness of Jennifer Louden, Camille Maurine and all my circle sisters at LSR I had the chance to spread the Story-Beads concept to a very welcoming audience. In fact, you’ll find many of their stories sprinkled throughout the site. I came back knowing that this site was meant to be.
It’s taken 2 years, several craft fairs and a move to a new house to bring this all into being. The journey, though not always easy, has been educational. Yes, the trail of breadcrumbs behind is easy to see, obvious as stepping stones. I think the birds can take them now, like they did in Hansel & Gretel. I wouldn’t go back now, even if I had the choice.
